Day 2: Munising, MI and Mackinac Island
2:45am: full alert because Dan woke up getting dripped on... that roof duct tape solution didn't quite hold, but the leakage was minor enough that we went back to sleep. The campground was pretty heavily flooded even thought the rain stopped in the early morning. Reminded me of when I brought the kids up here - our campsite was completely flooded out and we had to scramble to find a hotel for the night. Thankfully our site was intact.
Got to have my morning coffee with this view:
Still very cold.
Did a little beach walking before going into town for breakfast.
Had breakfast at Earl E. Byrds restaurant (yummmmy breakfast burrito). Back to do a quick pack up and head into Pictured Rocks. We did the short walk down to Miner's Beach and got to enjoy the view of some of the rocks - weather finally cleared up enough to enjoy it!
And then we were off to the next destination. Well. Sort of. Turns out there are not any gas stations between Pictured Rocks and Kitch-iti-Kipi. Which we found out once service kicked in. With less than 50 miles in the tank that had suddenly dropped. So, we doubled back to secure some gas - did not feel like risking it, even though we have the bikes along. We don't need that kind of adventure today haha.
Dan had recommended Kitch-iti-Kipi, which is a natural spring in one of the Michigan State Parks.
It was MOSTLY on our way to St. Ignace, so, why not? Reminded me of Paradise Springs at home - except there is a raft you can float on across the springs. There is an open viewing area in the middle to see the bottom - very cool!

We headed to Straits State Park to get camp ready. It was clear it had poured here as well - bugs and mud. When I say get camp ready, I really just mean unhook the camper because oh my is that so much easier than setting up tents and air mattresses!! After setting up, we jumped the ferry to Mackinac Island for the rest of the evening. But here is the view from our campsite:
(That is not our tent though).
Beautiful island. We hiked up to Fort Mackinac and took in the view as well as a rifle and cannon demonstration. Prices are no joke on the island: 2 drinks was $25, and we split a dinner that still somehow totaled $63?? Best $30 half a chicken sandwich and cider beer I've had I guess? I think it would be fun to stay on the island after I hit the lottery. Or when Sara reveals she is a secret billionaire (I know you read this blog Sara lol). I did like that there were no cars on the island. And if we would have had more time, we definitely would have brought the bikes (for an additional $21 each on top of the ferry cost...)
It was a WINDY trip back to mainland. Really glad Dan made me grab that hoodie as we ran out of the car to catch the ferry!
We headed back and waited until it was nice and dark so we could get some bridge pictures. Did not disappoint.
Mackinac Bridge
1. Highway in Michigan is a generous term and may involve gravel roads - great for the Scamp (insert sarcasm).
2. I like being able to walk on a beach when I can't sleep at night.
Lake Huron
I would have missed this moon!
3. Seagulls are assholes.
4. Michigan State Parks require a park pass on top of camping reservations.
5. When you go to check the wiring for hooking up the lights to the camper and it comes out as powder, you might need new wiring. Also: Auto stores are closed Sunday nights in St. Ignace.
Up next: Niagara Falls, ON - let's see how the AT&T service works there...
